Grid Connected Solar System

Grid connected solar power systems

While the technology behind solar power may seem complex, when broken down, grid connect is easy to understand as it only requires a few components installed in your home or business.

Here’s how a grid connected system works:

How Solar power for grid connection Works

  1. The sun shines on the solar panels generating DC electricity
  2. The DC electricity is fed into a solar inverter that converts it to 110 /240V 50Hz AC electricity.
  3. The 110 / 240V AC electricity is used to power appliances in your home.
  4. Surplus electricity not consumed by your home appliances is measured via your Electricity meter.
  5. This surplus electricity not consumed is fed back into the main grid.

Whenever the sun shines, the solar cells generate electricity. The grid connect inverter converts the DC electricity produced by the solar panels into 110/240V AC  electricity, which can then be used by the property/household.
If a grid connect system is producing more power than is being consumed, the surplus is fed into the mains power grid. At the moment most electricity companies will meter the electricity fed into the grid by your system and provide a credit on your bill. Other companies may soon offer to install a bi-directional meter which will run backwards as your system feeds electricity into the grid.
When the solar cells are not producing power, for example at night, your power is supplied by the mains power grid as usual. The energy retailer charges the usual rate for the power used. You may also enjoy the benefit of having a Wind Turbine Generator that may continue to produce power to feed additional renewable energy into the grid, providing you with more opportunities to reduce your energy bill.
As all of the components in a grid connect system have no moving parts, you can expect a long and hassle free life from your solar power system!

Having the freedom to generate your own energy means you can also save thousands on your grid connect system!
